Love the idea of Blue seeing the most beautiful natural phenomenon you can see and saying "Sure does suck that you weren't there!"

The exception to this is a total solar eclipse. The ring of white fire looks just as spectacular in real life as it does in the pictures, but the pictures can't capture the full experience: the sudden twilight, the way the temperature abruptly and noticeably drops, it's otherworldly. Like the world is holding its breath.

One thing is that often it should be closer to the edited one but there’s so much light pollution that there’s very few places anymore where the night sky looks how it’s supposed to (although yes some of the colors are certainly exaggerated)

Also, the aurora looks better in pictures than in real life. When we had that solar storm laat year that brought the aurora to lower latitudes, I looked at the sky, didn’t see anything, and took a picture to show that there was nothing. The picture clearly showed the aurora.

Even though you can see more detail with astrophotography, I would say that seeing the night sky in an area without light pollution is still an awesome experience, and doesn't require any very special timing (other than going for sometime close to a new moon). I took a trip with some friends to Lake Powell to see the annular eclipse a couple years ago and I still feel like the night sky we saw out there was more impressive than the eclipse (which you had to appreciate through solar filters the whole time, even during 'totality').

Exactly. Take a quote from Mariana Diamond's song Oh, No ! "TV taught me how to feel, now real life has no appeal."

Can confirm the average northen lights you will see in iceland are for crap, two lightly lighter patches in the sky was all it took for the tour company to say "Well there you go folks, you saw the northern lights now you can't get a refund for the bus ride and 2 hours of standing in the dark"

Tasmania's stars do not disappoint. Nothing in the overpopulated Northern hemisphere can even come close, not even the obviously over-edited photos

That's how I felt when I saw Neptune. Years ago, it looked beautiful and had a color like a marble. Now that color is fading away. It's sad.

Took pictures of the auroras in the PNW last year and I could barely see them, but my phone color corrected them to look cool af. Nice, I guess?

The night sky is pretty neat still without all the light pollution.
