The exception to this is a total solar eclipse. The ring of white fire looks just as spectacular in real life as it does in the pictures, but the pictures can't capture the full experience: the sudden twilight, the way the temperature abruptly and noticeably drops, it's otherworldly. Like the world is holding its breath.

Even though you can see more detail with astrophotography, I would say that seeing the night sky in an area without light pollution is still an awesome experience, and doesn't require any very special timing (other than going for sometime close to a new moon). I took a trip with some friends to Lake Powell to see the annular eclipse a couple years ago and I still feel like the night sky we saw out there was more impressive than the eclipse (which you had to appreciate through solar filters the whole time, even during 'totality').

Can confirm the average northen lights you will see in iceland are for crap, two lightly lighter patches in the sky was all it took for the tour company to say "Well there you go folks, you saw the northern lights now you can't get a refund for the bus ride and 2 hours of standing in the dark"
