it is only temporary. the spasm returns after a while. and you definitely have to be careful with botox. the doctor may mistakenly give you a higher dose and then the arm or leg completely loses function. it's more for facialis. I also did a couple of operations. after those surgeries I'm even worse. nothing should be touched by force. Eight years after the stroke, everything is still the same. when I actively practiced every day for 4 hours, that's when I felt the best. so my recommendation is only exercise and a healthy diet. As natural as possible. exercises in the pool, regular walks. preferably regular sex:) Greetings!

I NOW use HYLURONDAIS SHOTS! My PHYSIATRIST was/is the RESEARCHER that discovered that this works, too. Thank you, Dr. Preethi Raghaven.

My question is, if you don’t want to use Botox, what else is out there that you can do as an exercise to reduce tone?

I was under the impression that botox paralyzes your muscles. The way you described it, the process sounds benign, like it's temporary and only has positive results. What I was told is that it doesn't actually wear off, instead your body reroutes the nerves. Also, over time your muscle is gradually replaced with fat due to it not being able to be activated.

Is my understanding incorrect? I had four rounds of injections for a year and was helped immensely by it, but it didn't sound like something I should do indefinitely. I've improved to the point that I can function without botox, although spasticity is still an issue for me.

Botox did absolutely nothing for me. Had gone 2 sessions as advised by my neurologist and PMR. it was completely waste of money for me. Did absolutely nothing. May be it is usefull per medical science, but for me both the procedures were utterly useless. 1st session was of 400 units and second session was of another 400 units.
