I remember as a 4 year old, watching my grandmother who was born in 1901, stick her hand in oven to check the temperature. She told me how many seconds she could leave her hand in to know what the temp was. I don't quite remember the number of sceonds. Possibly 3 seconds to bake cookies.

The joys of trying to follow a recipe that was written before electric ovens with thermostats were invented or were really common in households. I have a couple magic baking powder recipe books, the promotional booklets, that are written like that. When I googled them, it was hard to pin down a time frame but they seemed to be published around the '30s or '40s.

I love those vintage vague directions, like butter the size of an egg...large egg, medium egg, chicken egg, quail egg, ostrich egg?

Also, a "slack" oven is 300-325°

I think I saw photos of ovens with dials that said "low" or "moderate" or hot. So um where was the someone else cook it for me setting????
