I personally prefer foambases cuz they are like wearing a pillow, you can cuddle in them and feel it cuz foam lets pressure a bit through, you can transport them easier (some even vacuum transport their foamheads), you can even wash some foam heads in the washing machine which is great, you can edit foam bases a lot more, even afterwards you can still add magnetic addons etc.

as a fursuit maker, I much prefer 3D printed headbases! I outsource the printing to fuzzbutt studios because they have a ton of options and also let you customize the heads, so it is a little more expensive, but I really, really hate having to go through the process of making sure everything is symmetrical and a lot of that other structural stuff with fursuit making - I love just being able to jump right into the padding and sewing.

Something to note! Ive found that 3d printed heads are much more 'glasses wearer' friendly! The fronts of the heads are usually much wider and with a fan in the back i can wear my glasses a-ok ^^ Also, most libraries nowadays have 3d printers in them! Just call and ask if they do, and set a timeslot and youre good to go :D

As a 3D printer technician who has access to a wide array of materials, including really strong ones like polycarbonate that allow for lightweight designs, I think I know what route to go with.
Plus, I’ve seen a lot of people’s first attempts at foam bases turn out lopsided, and they end up looking kinda creepy. 3D printing seems like a safer choice as a beginner, since the only way to screw up is with the shaving. (At least, I would assume.)

Even though I'm a fan of both, I'm really a fan of 3d printed bases. I really like the vent holes and how sturdy they are. I'm no good with foam, especially when it comes to making and carving faces. Only annoying thing about 3d printing for me is leveling the bed for the first time though, but I guess it's fun to see the 3d printer print after Fighting with the bed level , lol

I find that they both have their pros and cons.
The durability and consistent shape throughout its life as well as the ability for precise design with the 3D heads is nice. If the foam inside parts are attached with Velcro, the entire inside is so much easier to clean.
On the other hand, I find the 3D printed heads MUCH heavier and honestly don’t love wearing them. I also find that sound and my voice echoes a lot and I don’t like that.
As another commenter mentioned, I also find foam heads much nicer for cuddling.
Also, while 3D printed heads are generally more durable, they are far less forgiving to blunt forces. So, in the rare event that one were to fall or the head was dropped, a foam head would typically just absorb that impact and be fine. The 3D printed heads are likely to crack and then they’re pretty much irrepairable.
They are both good options. I think it ultimately ends up with what the end user/wearer prefers or finds most suitable for their needs.
