El monumento hace referencia a un momento clave de la Revolución Francesa: la toma del Palacio de las Tullerías en 1792. Los nombres inscritos en el monumento son los de los oficiales que murieron ese día, y los números 760 y 350, hacen referencia, respectivamente, al número aproximado de guardias muertos y sobrevivientes. Entre los siglos XV y XVIII, más de 500.000 soldados sirvieron. El 60% nunca regresó a casa. ✍️ Mark Twain definió la escultura del león como "El trozo de piedra más triste, conmovedor y contundente del mundo".
