Sooo maybe big rigs are different but I know with regular vehicles running your tank low(on E or gas light on) can harm your fuel pump, from my understanding it's because while that low of fuel is sloshing around, you can have a moment when the pump isn't sucking in fuel but air and the fuel basically acts like a lube, which is why you need to prime fuel pump before installing, same with oil pump. So it might not destroy pump instantly but can cause major damage.
