Back in the 1970s fireworks went on sale in sweet shops a week or two before November 5th. So us kids would be letting them off in the street for over a week. We had loud bangers. Even louder jumping jacks. If you straightened them out, so they went off in one loud bang. We ran around holding air bombs, that would shoot out fire balls. Which bounced off trees and exploded in the air.

It was like that in the 1960s too when I was a teenager .it was good fun .
Look up โ€œGood Friday morning .โ€
We would get up very early in the dark morning ,all us kids would make a street bonfire and burn an effigy of Judas .Fire engines would come and put the fire out then we would go home for breakfast of salt fish and hot x buns .It seemed only one part of Liverpool did this .more fun .

I remember (in the 70s) the radio the morning after the 5th would be full of news of fires gone out of control and the number of people taken to hospital with burns. Excellent fun.

When i was a small child in the 50s, our fireworks were in our back yard and garden. Bonfire on the vegetable plot, and Catherine wheels pinned to the fence, spinning like crazy. Health and safety would go crazy ๐Ÿ˜‚

Even in the 70s as an 8 year old, I remember walking through the streets with a marauding group of kids. Following a bloke called Paddy Divaney screaming, "We're going to burn the Guy at the top of our lungs", setting off things that go bang and getting my first kiss on the cheek by Paddy's red headed daughter Michelle. Its a night thats stuck in my head for over 40 years.
Then we moved to Australia and that was that. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚

A penny for the guy, treacle taffy, parkin, town bonfire, and a baked potato in her pocket. That's how my mother, born in 1930, in Lancashire, used to describe Guy Fawkes night. Born Canadian I was horrified the country burned an effigy of this person every year. How barbaric! I'll stick with my witches and werewolves thank you very much! Lol
