It's incredible this was invented hundreds of years ago.

The fact that a one second pendulum is so close to one metre in length, they almost used that property to define the metre, until it was realised that it's also dependent on altitude, so they measured the earth with the metre instead.

They're both remarkably beautiful and brilliantly engineered.

Small correction: high end watches can be as precise as 1 second variation per day, but not cumuled
That means it will be off reality by only one second at all time, only if it is worn though, the watchmaker uses a few tricks to calibrate the balancint wheel depending on its most frequent position to remain precise

The invention of the coiled spring made it possible to bring clocks on board of ships, thus making it possible to accurately determine one's longitude at sea.

Only 12 days to become a minute off sounds crazily inaccurate nowadays 😅

I highly recomend seeing some pocketwatch restoration videos
you get to see all the little details inside that are moving

the weight 'randomly' winds up the spring in the watch - it doesnt unwind it. The spring drives the hands, and the power output is metered.

The pendulum does not drive the watch/clock.
Tglhe pendulum prevents the mechanism from moving too fast.

I got a high end mechanical watch as a reward for working for a company for 20 years (I'm sure they regret this policy...). It's incredible to see the inner workings of it. The overall craftsmanship is truly something to behold.

I always love the previous watch mechanism, the Fusée. Absolutely incredible way of getting round the movement issue with a chain and a cone

Given the meaning of “pensioner” in British English, “pension clock” is a pretty funny miscaption.

Building a pocket watch is like solving the longitude problem

Five seconds per day?! If I tossed something on the old chronometer and saw it reading a five second loss per day I'd be stripping it down to individual parts, thoroughly cleaning those parts in my three step cleaning system, then reassembling and lubricating everything as needed. Probably give it a new main spring, and if it's an automatic wonder I'll make sure things can swing without any issue.

The pendulum doesn't drive the mechanism, but regulates the speed. Mechanical /Clocks are driven by springs or weights.

Pension clock every time you check it: "Yup, you're old."
