Such hypocrisy to say he âcompletely respects their lawsâ when his actions blatantly disrespected their laws (if he respected their laws he would have thoroughly checked his bag to ensure there wasnât anything that shouldnât be traveling internationally, preventing this oversight from occurring). Respect requires forethought, which is clearly absent here. As an American who has had the privilege of extensive international travel I will never fail to be dumbfounded by the entitlement of Americans.

It doesn't matter if what you are carrying is legal at home, nor does it matter your intent. If I fly to the US from Uruguay with an ounce of weed, I very much doubt that telling the feds 'I'm sorry, I had zero intent, how will locking me up help you' etc. would cut much ice. If you're gonna be dumb (and not check your pockets before you fly), you gotta be tough. Man up.

No intent. It was an accident.
That's a big part of the problem. No one should be accidentally taking ammunition anywhere at anytime.
Totally irresponsible and potentially dangerous. It's going to be an expensive lesson to learn - no one should ever take a suitcase on public transportation (esp airlines) without having checked it out thoroughly before even starting packing.

"I don't see how imprisoning me is going to help them in any way..." Let me explain it to you: it serves as a warning and a deterrent for other people that carry knowingly or not guns and ammunition into the country. Basically, they are going to make an example out of you.
