HI. I WAS A "VOLLIE" FOR 25 YEARS ( THEY LET ME DRIVE THE SUTPHEN PLATFORM, THE 1ST NON-CAR I EVER DROVE!! DAYTIME STAFFING HAS ALLWAYS BEEN A PROBLEM, ESPECIALLY FOR SUBURBAN TOWNS NEAR A BIG CITY, WHERE A LOT OF THE VOLLIES COMMUTE TO WORK; PLUS THE FACT THAT EVEN WHEN THEY HAVE JOBS IN TOWN, EMPLOYERS ARE LESS LIKELY TO ALLOW THEM TO RESPOND, FOR FEAR OF LOSING JOB PRODUCTIVITY. YOU HAVE TO HAVE PAID, FULL TIME "CAREER FIREFIGHTERS" IN THE DAYTIME. SINCE WE VOLLIES, WHEN NOTIFIED ( USUALLY BY PAGER, BUT MY 1ST FEW YEARS THE STILL BLEW THE "SIGH-REEN"!! ) USUALLY START RESPONDING IN LESS THAN 60 SECONDS, I CALL VOLLIES "THE LAST AMERICAN MINUTE-MEN"!!!

I gave up on volunteering for the FD when against all common sense and protests they set a practice fire close to the Chiefs house.

Because young people don't want or have to put up with a chief or higher rank individuals that are on a power trip....
We are volunteers and even though we do get paid for calls we are not employees or in the military.....
