What's the smallest gap a budgie can fly through? To find out, let's meet Poppen, the bird at the heart of new research into flight.

Poppen was filmed in stereo flying through a wide range of gaps down to a gap a mere 1/4 of her wingspan. She used two different wing postures to get through the gaps and could tolerate very small safety margins (down to 6 mm on either side) but preferred greater safety when gap width allowed. When gaps were smaller than wingspan, flight speed was reduced and wingbeat frequency was increased.
