Needs to carry a flashlight and use, it nobody going to assume you're a neighbor, when they cant see you in the pitch black, ever. and shuffling your feet in the dark without saying something !!. Then you ask if she needs your assistance without introducing yourself or saying where you live or apologizing for scaring her? Yes OP is the AH and creepy as heck.

Yeahhhh this is a weird one. I live in a area that is populated but gets really dark at night and everyone who is out jogging or walking their dogs will have on some kind of light up gear or a flashlight or something. If I’m out at night and slowing down for walkers I wave from my car, like a normal person. Roaming around in the dark seems predatory in these times, no matter your intentions.

As someone who has family living in an area that sounds exactly like what they describe. If there aren´t any street lights, I doubt they have a gate, itś proably just a sign saying private road. Obviously people could walk/drive up the road like that even if they were not supposed to. OP sounds like a guy and has never had to live with the constant awareness that comes with being female and having to always be aware of their surroundings. Even in well lit areas we have to be aware of others because who knows if they are the next Jeffrey Dahmer. Also sometimes you move to the mountains to get away from people and so it can be jarring to suddenly realize there are others around, and if you don't know thier inentions, sometimes we assume the worst. Because the worst has happened before.

I mean Idk it was weird that you shuffled your feet, and when she said there was a weird guy on the road you should’ve just said “Hey I’m just your neighbor, I take walks at night sorry if I scared you.”. As a girl I get how she would be scared.
