Transcript: This famous country will disappear forever from the world map! And for a reason, you would never imagine.

As you can see, one of its villages, once home to thousands of people, is now completely empty.

And it's not just one village; there are more than 6,000 villages that have been entirely deserted for the past few years. Even teachers are being fired because there are no students in the classrooms to teach.

In 2015, the health minister publicly announced that the country is dying, and one of the main reasons is that not enough babies are being born. The country’s total fertility rate over the last 50 years is the lowest among all.

This nation was once known for its big families, but today it's entering a dark age…

And the country is Italy.

Anyway, there are few other countries with similar trends. So, can you guess them?

I'm Italian, I'm emigrated to Canada because life is unsustainable over there. We don't have babies because our government doesn't help us, there are no support programs nor stimulating help for families to have babies. The salaries are low, the job market is stagnant with no economy stimulation at all

At first I thought you were going to say it was sea-level rise that would make it disappear

As an italian i can say that italy it's a beautiful country to visit but it's not easy to live in it. The main problem is finding a good job that pays enough. It is even harder to find a job at all in South italy. That's why we go away from here.

Not Fun fact: a 17 year old in Italy was hitted by a car drived by a drunk Police officer and he died. this "beautiful government" di not fired the Cop or even made him pay anithing to the family of this poor guy. But the family had to pay the government 100 euro for removing this guy's Blood from the street.
I am ashamed
PS: Sorry for some errors but i am an italian 10 year old and i am learning english😢

I'm American and I live in Italy now due to my Italian boyfriend. The reason this is happening is because there are no jobs. Me and other educated foreigners find it so difficult to find work here. Even young Italians leave the country. If you don't work, you can't afford to have kids. Plus the government gives you basically nothing to help cover the costs of having children.

Craco is a bad example for a city that emptied out because it was built on a mountain and said mountain would move with rain. The houses were very dangerous for this reason

As an Italian I can say it's all government fault if population is slowly decaying, most of us prefer to escape abroad instead of battling against corruption infecting the country

I’m from Italy. I moved to the US with my dad and stayed because there is no work in Italy. I wouldn’t be able to make a life for myself there. I want to open a business and I can do that in the US, but definitely not in Italy unless I have good connections. I have two children with an American husband and we visit often to see my family, my children are Italian and American citizens like myself, and they went to school in this year so they can learn Italian while we lived with my mom in Rome and there weren’t many kids in the school. In ROME! It’s a major city, and the school wasn’t overwhelmingly packed like one would expect.

I recently went to a suburb in Rome. The problem is that the government does not help the people and this is clearly evident. I walked passed a pushchair left near a few bins and turns out there was a baby left in there. A friend of mine said that this is actually quite normal because of the poverty. Quite sad tbh.

I'm from Basilicata and Craco was actually abandoned due to instability of the terrain, not for the lack of birth

It will not "disappear". This happens all the time. The population will be just heavily decreasing, until it becomes stable again.
