In Japan and a lot of eastern countries, it's customary to remove your shoes before entering anywhere.
However, something there's something interesting in only Japan.
When people take their own lives, they take their shoes off.
This is for two reasons.
One, it's so that their case isn't mistaken for a murder.
And two, like I said earlier, it's customary to remove your shoes before entering anywhere. That includes the afterlife.

The slow, mocking grin that lifts his lips hints his thoughts more than his words will. "I thought you'd run away. You don't stray away from the battlefields, and that's surprising to know."
I'm silent.
Oh, I could.
But I wouldn't.
If I die, I die fighting.
This is a losing game.
And I know it.

Soundlessly, the hero slipped out of their shoes with grace, meeting the villain's unwavering stare.
"What the hell are you doing?"
Unfazed by the villain's snarl, the hero squared their shoulders as they had countless times before.
"Don't tell me you're backing out of your threats now."
Ignoring the taunt, the villain narrowed his obsidian eyes.
"I'd always known you had a death wish but even my twisted mind hadn't expected you to show up tonight. What changed?"
The hero and villain were circling each other now, drawing closer with every daring step.
The hero smiled wryly. Fragmented glass shards dug into their bare feet, leaving bloodied stains across the ground.
"Escaping death gets old after a while. I should've been chasing you from the start."
The villain lashed out, blades glinting like the hunger in his empty gaze.
"You do know that you're not walking out of this with victory, right?" he murmured, pressing the weapon against the hero's neck.
The hero laughed coldly.
The villain stilled as they felt the hero lean into the blade.
"Absolutely."
Throwing their head back sharply so it made contact with the villain's nose, the hero ducked out of his weakened grasp.
"However, I'm not planning on going down easily."
Wiping a smear of blood across his face, the villain gave a crazed grin.
"I always liked a challenge."

I didn’t want my loved ones to have to take my shoes off. I mean, what kind of grand finale—way to be taken out—is that? Not a great one.
I would rather be prepared.
I knew the moment I stepped into battle that he would kill me. My fate was sealed the moment my toes brushed the gravel beneath me. I accepted it.
The villain watched me with a peculiar look in his eyes—his gaze flickering between the discarded pair of shoes and my face. His lips twitched up in a half-smile. “Superstitious, much?” he inquired, one brow arching.
I flinched as he cracked his knuckles—a thought flashed through my mind, brief but sharp: That could be the sound of my bones soon. Swallowing down the bile rising in my throat, I choked out a meager, “No,” before adding, “I just know when to quit.”
The villain made a sound of disbelief—somewhere between a sneer and a snort. “Well… you seem to have a death wish.” His hands rose in a casual shrug as he began his advance toward me. “Let’s make it short and sweet, alright?” He saluted as though tipping a hat—a mocking gesture.
My gaze dropped, humiliation slicing through me. I nodded. Today was the day.

I was exhausted. This would be the last battle I would ever fight in and he knew it. He had incapacitated me in every single way possible and it was now my time. I take off my shoes as a reminder that a part of me was never going to be forgotten. That I would be remembered for a fighting cause.
“What are you doing? Come on, don’t give up so easily. We all know who you are. A fighter.” He drew out, taunting me like it was this funniest joke. “You seriously have nerve, I’ll give you that.”
He stares up at me waiting for me to respond and fight back. When I don’t respond he continues, “People back in my day never quit. FIGHT. BACK.”
I numbly look up from the place I was standing. “No.”
He looked like I had smacked him. “No?” He asked angrily.
I almost wanted to laugh at my audacity. Saying no to a god was clearly not a good way to ask for a quick and painless death. I stare at him dead in the eyes. “No.” I reply calmly. “I know when to pick and choose my battles. And unlike you, I know when to stop and give up.” He had a sort of sneer mixed with suprise on the tip of his lips and yet he said nothing. And then it all came crashing down.
THIS IS MY FIRST TIME MAKING A STORY SO FEEL FREE TO GIVE ME POINTERS!!!
