Through my own healing, I have learned to see myself as a friend. I take care of her, look at her with appreciation, understanding, grace, and support. Seeing my friend (me) enjoy herself, especially in ways that she used to be afraid of being judged for, has been a revolution.
There is no "guilty" pleasure. There is just pleasure.

This felt a bit like a gut punch for me. Like looking through a glass darkly and seeing a light. Thank you.
Horror for me was a way to “feel” like sometimes things are worse than my life is… to gain perspective. I often felt despondent after reading a lighter and happier book because the thought demon in my head would say things like “that could never be your life” or “why do you torture yourself with things that couldn’t possibly happen to you (affection, camaraderie, friendship, etc.) best to leave those stories to people who have a chance”🤷♀

It's really interesting hearing your perspective on how horror has affected you, and I'm glad you've made that realisation and have moved on to things that make you happy! For me, horror is fun and escapist most of the time. It allows me to take emotions like anxiety and fear and experience them in a controlled environment. By having that level of control and making negative feeling fun, it has really helped me with my mental health. I also love fantasy, but funnily enough, when I was reading more pure fun escapist stuff I found my mental health was actually worse whenever I wasn't fully immersed in the escapism. Thanks for sharing your perspective!

This is good advice. And about feeding your inner child ... what has helped me very much with my social anxiety was the following self help book: "Breaking Negative Thinking Patterns: A Schema Therapy Self-Help and Support Book" by Gitta Jacob, Hannie van Genderen and Laura Seebauer. Schema Therapy is basically about all the inner parts of us, like the inner child, inner destructive parts, inner parental figures who are well-meaning and more, and how to work with these best and change thoughts patterns about ourselves etc. There are also exercises in the book and lots of examples of patients with different problems.

I understand why I read what I read. (A bit for every part, including confirming what kind of horror i enjoy) I have a whole comfort selection for books. Usually I use them (the audio books) at night before sleeping. May i recommend: Mrs. Polifax series read by Barbara Rosenblatt. The Unexpected Mrs Polifax is about a grandmother who decides to join the CIA. The 1st book was written in 1966. Also The Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peter's. Also read by Barbara Rosenblatt.
