This verse comes from one of the most dramatic stories in the Bible. The Israelites, fresh from their escape from Egypt, found themselves trapped between the Red Sea and the pursuing Egyptian army. Despite witnessing God's strength and power displayed through the 10 Plagues, they were still gripped by fear.
The Israelites didn't have a way to defend themselves and were in a state of helplessness. Moses tells them not to fear, that the Lord will fight their battles for them. All they have to do is be still.
The command to "be still" is a call to trust in God. In the face of overwhelming danger, silence represents calm faith and surrender rather than frantic efforts to control the situation.
As Christians, this encourages us to trust in God in our moments of fear, uncertainty, or overwhelming odds. We are not called to control or fix every situation but to trust and surrender.
I don't know about you, but I find stillness hard. I'm wired to tackle things head-on, and trusting in God, even when I know his ways are best, is still challenging at times. Breath prayers like this help me to remain still, silent, and strong in my faith.
Exodus 14:10-14 As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians, marching after them. They were terrified and cried out to the Lord. They said to Moses, "Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? Didn't we say to you in Egypt, 'Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians'? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!" Moses answered the people, "Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still."
