Garrett's single-sequential turbocharger featured an industry-first double-sided compressor wheel mounted on a single shaft. Turbocharger failures were common on 2011 and 2012 model year 6.7L Power Stroke-equipped pickups because of weak ceramic ball bearings. A switch was made to steel ball bearings. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to keep this turbo in production. Ford opted for a single-wheel compressor for the 2015 model year.

I'd say for Gale Banks to be impressed with a stock turbo: it should be good!

So it's a single turbo that spools like a twin, pretty genius trick actually!

I have a 2011 F250 with the ORIGINAL TURBO and 460k on it! I did have to put a new transmission in at 360k. Yes I tow with it and drive it like I stole it!! How is this possible? Maintenance, Maintenance, Maintenance!!!

That's how innovation goes sometimes. It take a lot of time and money to prove something out that should work in theory.

The real benefit of this design was it's very quick spool and transient characteristics. If you drive a 14 and 15 back to back it's noticeable and slightly disturbing because in the back of your head you think something is wrong with the truck for that split second until you remember you're driving the newer truck. All from the idea of producing larger turbo flow via using twin small diameter and therefore small MOI wheels that spin up much faster using the same exhaust energy.

Someone's pet project didn't work out. But the engineering advance and experience is priceless.

Friggin thing sounds incredible. Got 350k on mine and deleted with 5" exhaust and it sounds sick as hell. Absolutely love it

I have 2011 with 310k miles on it , have no emissions from 60k , engine is amazing, turbo never failed ...... yet. Checked if I had wiggle in the shaft and it's solid.

That compressor is very similar to those used in 1st generation centrifugal jet engines like the British Whittle W1.X or Russian Klimov VK-1.

Too much engineering is okay as long as it's followed up by extensive testing. I don't think they did too much of the latter.

I would think we should be able to beef that shaft and bearings up and make it a impressive reliable turbo.

It must have been just what Frankenstein thought after his Monster wasn't welcomed into the community in just four days...

Well, there goes 8 years of effort.

I actually like these they spool quick for the flow. Mitsubishi was back had an axial flow turbine feeding and centrifugal on a common shaft and from what I understand it actually worked out great in racing as it spooled quick for the day and was happy making 45psi of boost when the competition same size was struggling doing anything past 30psi with just making heat. Even this turbo could be modified for compound with just a back plate redesign

Could be a good idea for a compound turbo setup, with a common turbine

Nice. Worked at Borgwarner, that's pretty sweet

Somebody thought "dual-scroll turbine wheel = better, so dual-scroll compressor wheel also better?" then they made it and it did work.

Maybe this turbo would have proven more reliable in time if trucks didn’t get egr deleted and tuned. Just a theory 🤔
