1/3 As I watch an intensification of violence AND an intensification of empathy and compassion rising, I feel inspired to share a message that comes from my tradition of Nonviolent Communication and the teachings of my mentor, Marshall Rosenberg: we must focus on getting everyone’s needs met.

Whether in our personal lives, workplaces, societies, or global communities, neglecting the care and attention to everybody's needs can lead to violence. When people’s needs are horribly unmet, and they see others as the cause, there will be violence.

If we want to achieve peace, safety, and security, we must recognize the intricate connection between our well-being and the fulfillment of others' needs. At this level, distinctions between 'us and them' dissolve; it's simply 'us,' 'we the people' sharing this planet. We have tremendous challenges to face, we need to work together, and we are developing the skills and ability as human beings to do that.

Meeting our needs at the expense of others may appear as a short-term strategy, but it ultimately always backfires. We will pay the price if we don't equally strive to care for the needs, well-being, and happiness of others. Acknowledging the importance of their happiness as much as our own, we must understand our interconnectedness on this planet, where we all impact each other due to our interdependence.
