I live in McDowell county. We are poor, kind, hospitable, loving, caring, and we work hard. Our mountains are beautiful and we enjoy much silence. We do have many problems that any other town or city might have, but we love well. 💛

boone county is coal country now my husband (23) takes his test in April to be a certified electrician underground I am (20) and so proud of the life the mines has offered it we’re currently waiting on our 3rd baby’s arrival and are waiting for pur brand mew double wide to be built and delivered. May not be much or “fast” in WV but we have some amazing people, hard working men and lots of love for our people and towns. Blessed to be apart of the appalachia❤️

The elected officials are rich, but the people are poor. I don't understand why people vote against their own interests.

Expect more places in america to look like this. Nobody can afford housing anymore

Coal country has been abandoned. I mean that in every way. Men gave their lives to keep this country going and take care of their families. Appalachia is gorgeous. Good God fearing people.

I was raised there. I loved it then and i love it now. I've been in 38 States and I've yet to meet any friendlier people. Alabama came pretty close. The more poor you are, the less greedy you will be.

McDowell County was at one time, the top coal producer in the world. Thanks to the war on coal, this is what's left. But it will always be home to me.

Being poor around here is still better than being homeless on NY & CA where you get checks but can't afford your tent

We're experiencing similar issues in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. They closed down the iron mines decades ago. Since it's a peninsula, there's really nothing else around it. It's sad. The people there feel trapped and due to their circumstances, they really are

I got lost in West Virginia on the way to ACES Water Adventure Park. The impoverished people I saw there made me want to weep. There were people living without power and some didn't even have shoes. And that's coming from someone who came from an impoverished area.

I taught Taekwondo classes in Switchback, Keystone and Welch back in the mid 80s. Great folk, doing the best they could given the state of the coal industry.

WV is beautiful and to represent this as all of WV is a lie. Many homes don't look good on the outside but many are really nice on the inside. We need jobs and of late many corporate companies are going to build here, but we need more. We are no different than other states. The beautiful mountains and friendly people are worth it.🤗🙏

Born and raised in WV. The whole state has been going downhill for decades. The politicians only care about money in their pockets rather than helping the state they represent. Drugs have taken over that state. Once those coal mines shut down, there legitimately won't be anything left. I moved out of WV years ago, and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. It's a beautiful state, and I miss it sometimes, but there's nothing really there anymore.

My mom's fam is from WV coal country. Its a beautiful state with mostly kind and beautiful people. Sadly, it's gone bust and is ground zero for drugs and depression
Heartbreaking.
