कहानी की शुरुआत होती है मेवाड़ की धरती से, जहाँ राजा रतन सिंह और रानी पद्मिनी का राज्य था। रानी पद्मिनी की सुंदरता के चर्चे दूर-दूर तक फैले हुए थे। उनकी सुंदरता और शौर्य के किस्से दिल्ली के सुल्तान अलाउद्दीन खिलजी तक पहुंचे। खिलजी ने रानी पद्मिनी को पाने की ठानी और चित्तौड़ पर हमला करने का निर्णय लिया।
खिलजी ने राजा रतन सिंह से दोस्ती का प्रस्ताव भेजा और यह इच्छा व्यक्त की कि वह सिर्फ रानी पद्मिनी की एक झलक देखना चाहता है। चित्तौड़ की सुरक्षा को ध्यान में रखते हुए, राजा रतन सिंह ने यह तय किया कि रानी पद्मिनी की परछाई को पानी में दिखाया जाए, ताकि खिलजी की शर्त पूरी हो सके और युद्ध की स्थिति भी न बने
