Very true. And Ridley Scott actually said they took ācreative licenseā, as movie makers often do. The truth is, Commodus was a bad and very boring ruler. It would be very difficult to follow his father, poor bastard. But, take his real lack of character and heās a fantastic foil.
Mel Gibson did the same for Braveheart. The princess (eventual queen) lived decades apart - so no real love story there. And it made a great movie. If people want to learn history they should read history books.

It was never supposed to be accurate. It's a tale about an incredible person. Maximus never wished for fame or loyalty. He earned it. He was a truly fair and reasonable man with incredible combat skills who was thrust into an unbelievable situation. If you're mad that gladiator isn't realistic enough maybe you should start tearing apart Harry Potter next.

Sure, it's a bunch of crap, but Crowe made a great Maximus and Phoenix a nasty villain. A lot of films are like that. It makes you study history. It did me, and Commodus did sleep with his momma.
