As a psychotherapist in training and an orthodox christian, I agree. What keeps people in self-harming behavior very often is an environment that actively interferes with a healthy feeling of shame that would usually point them in the right direction. But because we have created a culture of shaming without the compassion to offer help or guidance, we have conditioned people into tearing themselves down due to shame or going the opposite way of revelling in shameful behavior in the name of sovereign individuality, committing the supreme sin of pride. We lost the truth of ourselves being sinners in need of saving, but readily point our finger at others.

Absolutely, Iāve heard people pray that they feel shame when they sin in order to lead them to repentance. Itās an important part of that process for sure

That clarifies for me more of the Gospel as far as being guilty and Jesus removing my guilt. I still feel very ashamed though.

No, shame is not good. So many churches today frame their gospel message around guilt and shame, always emphasizing performance. This often only produces severe self-criticism scrupulosity. The true foundation of the Gospel is GRACE.
