Crazy thing was I was 13 when that movie came out and I was actually living like the girls in that movie. The movie got a ton of shit and a lot of people called it unrealistic, and for 98 percent of teenagers it was, but for those of us who grew up in poor neighborhoods and messed up homes it made some of us feel seen. We even used to pop pills and pierce ourselves with fucking curtain needles like goddamn morons, so seeing it on film was kind of cathartic.
I'm glad I made it out to be in my thirties and cleaned up my act (took a LOT of therapy though). My teenager ended up being a good student and relatively normal. I sometimes feel bad for what I put my mom through and don't feel like I deserve to have such a well-behaved teenager, but my son learned that I knew all the tricks and he couldn't really sneak past me. Unfortunately my decisions still have negative consequences to this day, but I hope my son can break the cycle.

rewatching thirteen as an adult is such a jarring experience. instead of idolizing tracy and evie, youāre now (rightfully) horrified by and worried for them. you also have infinitely more compassion and empathy for tracyās poor mother than you did as a child watching that movie.
