India is once again prepared for another space adventure. Chandrayaan-3 is the successor mission to Chandrayaan-2, aiming to achieve a safe landing and complete mobility on the lunar surface. It will be launched today, July 14, 2023, from SDSC SHAR, Sriharikota, using the LVM3 rocket.
Chandrayaan-3 is the third lunar exploration mission by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), scheduled to launch on July 14, 2023.
The mission's primary objective is to demonstrate a safe landing and rover mobility on the lunar surface. In 2019, unfortunate circumstances during the last stage of descent led to the failure of Chandrayaan-2's lander and rover.
Chandrayaan-3 will be launched using the LVM3 rocket, known as 'Fat Boy,' due to its capacity to carry heavy payloads. If successful, the spacecraft will achieve a soft landing on the moon's surface in late August. This mission will further support India's future interplanetary endeavors.
Chandrayaan-3 comprises an indigenous propulsion module, a lander module, and a rover. The mission aims to develop and demonstrate new technologies required for interplanetary missions. Friday's launch marks the fourth operational flight of LVM3, a versatile launch vehicle capable of deploying multiple satellites and undertaking interplanetary missions. It is the largest and heaviest launch vehicle used by ISRO for domestic and international customer satellites.
