Heres my Theory: Lord Jashin is like The Shinigami and there are actually alot of shinigamis and they once dwelled on earth alongside the humans and animals. Their species were called Yokais and Nue was a failure trying to recreate a yokai. Since The 2 unknown Otsutsukis came on earth to implant a god tree the Yokais fended them off but not without any Costs. The last remaining Yokais, The known Shinigami and others we see in the temple of uzumaki and βLord Jashinβ were seen as gods by the humans for fending off the otsutsukis, although they went to another dimension to hide, since isshiki and kaguya came on earth and the remaining yokais were heavily weakened. The Yokais could have been another species that could use chakra, but the otsutsukis never found out since they were fended off, although they werent able to use nature chakra, since they are more in a enemy like relationship with the animals. that also explains why the animals never tried helping the yokais or summoning them later on in naruto. We could also say that the Otsutsukis the Yokais fought were alot stronger than the ones we know of (momoshiko, kaguya, isshiki etc.) since The Shinigami is arguably stronger than Isshiki etc. Anyways skip like a thousand years forward and the People that worshipped the Yokai split into 2 or more groups, The Uzumaki Clan and the Jashin Cult. People have started to forget about the Yokais, cause they have been hiding in another dimension, the people that still know about them had different Mindsets. On One hand Lord Jashin for example wanted blood etc. you know already and the people following him wanted the same, on another Hand other Shinigamis wanted you know what already (souls)and the people that followed them gave them souls. The Uzumaki clan and the Jashin cult fought alot and the Jashin cult was reduced to only a few people which hid in the Valley of Hell, Village of Rain etc. After the Uzumaki clan got defeated their Jutsus they used to speak with their βgodβ and summon it was also known and thats how people can summon the Shinigami. Thats it

If you think about it, the shinigami eats souls in exchange for a sealing, and jashin requires soul sacrifices for immortality

I hate boruto but it might be cool to explain Hidans immortality as a degenerative or just different form of karma or whatever its called ( the power given to boruto and kawaki). A secret otsutsuki using some type of yingyang jutsu to absorb lifeforce through his selected followers. And instead of an insane power boost that would get them way more kills in a shorter period he might have chosen immortality as a way of trying to keep a low profile. Just Hidan is an idiot and keeps telling everyone. Jashin might be a fake name to hide from otsutsuki like Momoshiki who I think are acting as their clans enforcers of their code of ethics/operations. Seems they weren't happy with how Kaguya did things. Who's to say she's the only rule breaker chilling on earth.
