Reminds of something Chesterton wrote, I think. It was something along the lines of, germany might have won if it had sent out as many people to study the "human geography" of France as they did geologists to survey France's soil.
That's a mistake empires continue to make, seemingly. Maybe because their existence depends on intentionally undervaluing the human geography of specific places.

History is one of the reasons I got to compete at the State Championship for the National Geographic Geography Bee in 5th grade. I think my love for history at such a young age strengthened my understanding of the world, both geographically and otherwise.

I do geology ,, we map our own cartogrophy , rivers wander and wood crumbles , but mine sites do tend to stay right where you dig them : egress; how to retreat down hill and with the wind at your back - theres a vital skill : the lay of the land ...is a vital thing : as if chess ...i never had any doupts ...once you get the prioretys right.
