In this short, I’m discussing the “shoot through” or “kick through.” Here, you get onto all-fours and then kick your leg from left to right, underneath.
I love this movement because it’s an explosive, bodyweight exercise in the transverse plane. The transverse plane is the rotational plane - twisting the body - and it gets sorely overlooked during much of our training. This is a mistake, seeing as we actually rotate our bodies a LOT - whether running, throwing, pushing, pulling, or grappling.
Rotational strength is particularly hard to train with bodyweight alone. The shoot through doesn’t offer much in the way of resistance, but by moving explosively, you can train this movement pattern and use it faster, and more powerfully.
Train this with FAST intent. Don’t just go through the motions - emphasise doing this quickly and powerfully, with extension. I’ve been doing that and it’s genuinely translated to greater athleticism in a WIDE range of different movement patterns.
Oh, and it looks really cool and unique.
Do you use the shoot through?
