Believe it or not there is live food in system like that even if it looked dirty and didn't feed the fish . It s a healthy water maybe it needed some water change not removing objects from the tank or stirring up the sand

The real issue was the smell. Fish live in much more murky waters and the dirt hides microscopic organisms that the fish can eat. It stinking however means something is rotting and releasing who knows what.
