You've trained to failure when you can't move the weight to contraction. If you don't try, you didn't train to failure.

The issue with failure training is recovery, not stimulus.

The problem with hitting failure vs a couple reps shy of that is the fatigue that comes with it. I guess if the people you're advising don't know how to train or where true failure is then youd need to suggest training as hard as possible every set, but for those of us that know what true failure is, we don't need it. If we did that we would get burnt out and plateau from that type of training. One or two reps short of true failure will work just as good and won't carry the same fatigue or injury risk. We also won't take as long to recover between workouts.

Dude I think you are 100% right. Iā€™ve been training to failure since day 1. And for me thatā€™s going until I literally cannot push the weight anymore and thatā€™s on each set. Now I will admit sometime I will stop when it just hurts literally too much and I know I can push more. Which I know I shouldnā€™t stop. Lesson learned. I think pushing to failure is the way to maximize growth and push our muscles past their limits.

I train every set to failure. Less volume for good recovery. Just works for me.

Agreed. But I think failure is speculative. I used to train to absolute failure, and I would get injured more often than I wanted to.

Now, I train to failure, and what that looks like is much different. Itā€™s when the muscles I am focusing on, quit. And the wrong ones start to take over. In the old days, sacrificing a little form for reps was common for me.

With the right amount of gear, ample nutrition, and quality sleep, recovery looks different.

Failure is excellent for bodybuilding! RIR is useful for strength athletes, and well, all athletes to keep the CNS from getting destroyed, especially in-season.

Appreciate you sharing the excellence!

Said the same thing for years.. I owned gyms and can tell you most people's idea of failure is literally 2 rir.. so now we tell them to go 2 rir but they are now literally 4 rir.. they don't know true failure.. so if he tell them go to failure they will at least be 2 rir.. Best you can hope for..

I think the point is, is that the guy in the clip appeared to be 7 reps from failure, yet just completely gave up. I think if you're a newbie, you have zero concept of what failure is. It's not just about going "as hard as you can". Even this takes months or years of practice.
