I have my own head Canon on this because my first mission from farkas of the companions was to rough up the bard. I then went to carlotta and when she acted surprised I wanted to help her, I got the feeling she was expecting a more reputable member to help her out- and knowing what we do about her I feel maybe she was expecting farkas or vilkas to take up her cause so that she could try to charm them.
