There's a trick that minimises mess and packs the bearing with grease more effectively. Instead of mushing the bearing onto the grease, you could try placing some grease on your finger and then pushing the grease between the small Gap formed by the inner and outter races. The bearing is oriented horizontally, the hole is facing your palm.
