Ceres has a fascinating story. Discovering the story that Mars, Earth has with Ceres will keep you hooked on Astronomy and Physics for life. Good Luck!

They just said, "we don't know what it is," which is a statement they should use more often than they are.

Rough math here, but the volume of Mars is about 375 times larger than the volume of Ceres. Ceres certainly ain't "about maybe 2/3's smaller than Mars". It's more like a big marble next to a gallon jug of milk.

New is a bit of a stretch, it was discovered in 1801. It's not really a planet. It was called a 'dwarf planet' by the people trying to keep pluto a planet (Pluto being 14 times more massive than Ceres.) The 'light' on the dark side of Ceres was the top of a mountain tall enough that it cleared the arc of the horizon, Ceres is so small its possible to outwalk its rotation.

Ancient Sumeritan text would say that it was split off from planet Tiamat when planet Nibaru(aka X) hit it and drove Earth into its orbit while the asteroid belt, Earth, comets, and our moon were formed from the debris of planet Tiamat.

Arizona State University scientists have proposed that the bright spots are best explained as resulting from briny water erupted from Ceres's interior that subsequently sublimated, leaving behind only the salt deposits.[7] Near-infrared spectra of these bright areas are consistent with a large amount of sodium carbonate, (Na
2CO
3) and smaller amounts of ammonium chloride (NH
4Cl) or ammonium bicarbonate (NH
4HCO
3).

Ceres is described and used as a hub on the tv show ‘The Expanse’. Best and most realistic show about our future.

People knew of it all the way back before Roman times. The planet was thought to control crops and harvests
