Thank you. My adult son sustained a TBI 2years ago. He looks ‘normal’ to a casual observer but testing has shown he still has significant cognitive impairments in memory, executive function etc. He also has lack of insight and thinks he’s the same as he was before a car hit him. Some people think I’m overreacting when I say he’s still affected so I needed to hear this validation. Thank you.

I’m Brian I suffered a brain hemorrhage because of a football injury at 16 in 1989. I was in a coma for 5 weeks and I suffered a stroke while I was in my coma. Miraculously I woke up but I was paralyzed on my right side and I lost half of my vision in both eyes. I’ve made a miraculous recovery thanks to my amazing and very supportive family and 6 grueling years of intense therapies to relearn everything over. I’m 52 now walking with a limp and live in an assisted living apartment with a roommate I have staff who help me as needed. U can’t tell I have a disability until I start talking and walking. I do slur my words at times and I fatigue easily. Know one understands unless u are a survivor how difficult life is after suffering a tbi. I was wearing a defective football helmet unfortunately. I’m one of the lucky ones who survived I am capable and blessed to live a quality life after my injury. I was a Glasgow coma scale 3 which is very low, most survivors that low if they survive are usually in a vegetative state no quality of life. I’m working part time at a local New York deli and doing amazing considering

I tell people it can be a little 50 first dates sometimes. I’m totally fine. I have long-term short-term and concept of time issues. And then we move on. I tell people it’s not level of importance otherwise I would remember my whole son’s childhood just some things fade. If I see someone in a different place, then I normally see them I may not recognize them at all. Don’t be offended, not level of importance. You don’t have to make it your personality. It’s just a little piece of it.

We know someone with a brain injury and she has become so angry, paranoid and volatile. It’s so hard to see someone who looks exactly the same but behaves so differently. We’re hoping she can get more help but her closest family members are trying to minimize her behaviour so she can keep working.
