In days gone by the only way to "cheat" was to visit a brothel.
The reason for this was that everyone knew everyone and women didn't put out unless they were serious and on their way to marriage, if not actually married.

You'd be hard pressed to find something as intoxicating as new "love" or, more accurately, lust. IMO people cheat to feel that way again. Monogamy is unrealistic.
