It really is a solid book. This group of students are each assigned a detention. While in detention, one of the students dies. (His death is not a spoiler, it's the inciting incident for the book and occurs in the first chapter.) As you read, you find out each of the 4 students in detention with him had motive and opportunity. All of them work to collectively prove their innocence by finding out who is actually responsible, all while under intense scrutiny from the public and the police. As they do, they come to bond as a group and learn about each other beyond the cardboard-cutout stereotypes (jock, princess, nerd, bad boy, again, not spoilers, literally on the cover).
It's a solid book. Think Breakfast Club meets Pretty Little Liars (if it had a satisfying conclusion to the mystery and didn't have the problematic relationships). Yes, you do find out who the killer is. Solid book, would recommend
