That actually was very close to my experience at MCRD San Diego in 1969. I grew up in rural North Dakota. Had never seen a Black person other than in the movies. We were in lines and I realized I’d be up against a really big brother. As we ran into the ring I held my upper hand on the pugil stick firm and pushed my lower arm straight forward. It swung up catching him under the crotch and it seemed like he literally lifted off the sand. That move gave me a tremendous amount of courage going forward.
