The blacksmith was one of the Most important people in any village.Kind of like an auto mechanic and department store!
He made shoes for the horses, and the tools they plowed with. He did repairs on iron stoves and indoor heaters. Before steel, almost everything was ironโฃ๏ธ

Am I the only one who finds the sound of rocks tumbling against each other to be immensely satisfying?

The bellows still impress me every time they show up in your vids. What an awesome preservation of technique

I was reading an account of how a pioneer farming family in Washington had to BUILD a forge, so that they could MAKE their own plowshares. Starter with nothing but know-how. Incredible

I like the delicacy of this. For an occupation associated with smashing molten materials itโ€™s really beautiful to see how tender it can be to split the wood and stoke the fire

I did this sort of thing in my teens. Reenactment was some of the best times in my life.

You know whatโ€™s funny? After work these people go home in their cars and just live a 21st century life like we do.

There were still a lot of charcoal forges in the 18th century too! I actually prefer charcoal as it's easier to obtain and smells better! Just takes a bit more babying though.
