the back story of my most recent character :
got kidnapped as a kid, by a group of cultist, used for ritual purposes, and when it showed no sign of posession, got enrolled as a guard for the cult. ended up one of the few survivors who where basically lost having known nothing of the world, and still believe in his teaching. currently wandering the world in search of a purpose, or something worth it. lawful evil, fighter/warlock multi class.

My favorite backstory for a character was about a guy that started adventuring to make some money for his wife and two kids. He was a neutral good character, always talking about his wife and kids, and would often send and receive letters from them.

Well, the plotwist was that his wife and kids were dead due to a disease, and he went crazy. The letters he sent were written by himself (Like a split personality) in order to avoid being paralyzed by grief, and kinda tricked himself to believe that they weren't dead, just waiting for them.

The goal of that character was to make money in order to buy the materials for true resurrection (Which we eventually did).

A hero who tries to do good deeds, but he's very petty, impulsive and sensitive, so he always ends up doing the opposite halfway through when things aren't going his way.

My champion fighter named ivan has the sole survivor bit paired with paranoia and a need to be fit for all situations. But this is a setup for a character in "seson 2" of an extended campainge where ivan starts a cult between the first and second part of the campainge and then dies. i will be playing ivans daughter who then inherits the cult along with all the powers and chaos of a little girl who is the direct person of whorship of a blood cult.

What do you think of a twist on these to make them more fresh an interesting? For example, I’m thinking about playing an oathbreaker Paladin who used to be a vengeance paladin because he swore a classic oath of vengeance when his parents were killed while ambushed on their way back from a military raid they had been participating in. My character then swore to kill any members of the religious/militant group that killed his parents. He spent his life in service to his nations military as a vengeance paladin blinded by his hatred until finally realising just how wrong his nation was for persecuting this religious minority and breaks his oath. Disillusioned with military life and his purpose for living, he spends his days wandering the countryside and fighting not to stop “evil” but to help anyone who needs it.

I have used all 3 of these
back stories myself and I agree that at least 1 player in your group has some variation of these.
