I worked in China in manufacturing, while good companies try to port over everything as exactly as possible, the local culture just puts so much emphasis on doing things "smarter", but it usually means cutting corners.
Also there's a huge amount of corruption between sourcing and the suppliers, changing that is a huge challenge and usually involves firing the entire sourcing dept, and HQ never understands why, since they are getting parts 30% cheaper. What they don't know is it should be 50% cheaper, and the sourcing personnel is pocketing 20%. So when quality issue happen, your own team is working more for the suppliers than they are for you.

Guessing Steve was "asked" to do this video as a follow up to his last one on the subject where he showed how to tell where your Stihl machine was made. Perhaps the Stihl rep, or his/her boss, suggested this video to clarify that those made in China should be of the same quality as the others. All I know is that I checked my Stihl blower and was quite glad that it was made in the US. To me the biggest crime with Stihl is that you can't get most parts anywhere except a Stihl dealer and my local dealer refuses to sell carb rebuild kits now. They said they have to order 4-5 and the rest sit on their shelf for years because no one buys them. Idk where Echo products are made, but I know you don't have to get parts for them from a dealer.

Just because the factory is "an exact replica" of the one in VA doesn't mean it is turning out a quality product, it isn't employing the exact same people. With everything else being equal, which the Stihl rep is implying, the people are still able to produce junk.
Not to mention the source of, or quality control of the parts. China has earned a well deserved reputation for putting out dangerous products (heavy metals in cookware and tableware for one example) and for use of substandard parts that break at the least bit of stress (remember the cheap steel they were sending here?).

I donât think the problem is that things are made in China, the problem is that too many bad manufacturers exist in China. Reputable manufacturers in China are great at what they do, itâs just theyâre more expensive than the people whoâll manufacture a part for you at half the cost and half the quality.
A global supply chain is not a bad thing, it helps us all because different regions can be more specialized in one specific industry. Just like how you have organs in your body, a global economy makes the system function better.
The best way to tell if a manufacturer is good is that it will always provide a solid warranty on parts. Any bad manufacturer wonât have a decent warranty, it just wouldnât be sustainable for that business.

The quality is determined by everyone, every step of the way. Even if it's the exact same spec and material it's not the same. Individual parts fail inspection all the time, the big question is, does the China plant use the same standards for inspection and do they have the same fail rate for individual parts and completed parts?

Of course your stihl rep would tell you that.
