The Diode is 1N4007. The 230V AC sinusoidal wave is blocked on one side whenever the diode is in reverse bias. Effectively running the element on only Half of the power. Means Element is getting current only in positive Cycles, removing the diode runs the element for both the positive and negative cycles thus delivering twice power as earlier.
