They spend the first 7 years of their lives in the water, and then they go through a metamorphosis, and grow wings, where they the fly around for a few days or weeks to breed, and then die. Itβs crazy to think that they live so long as a larva in the water, and then only survive as an actual dragonfly as we know it for a week or so.
