Have any of you hit a gas line and wished you called 811 or used your own underground circuit tracer? Full video linked in related video. Link also below.

Underground markings are allowed a 2 foot radius of the actual service or utility. They are not "off" but rather you need to exercise farther caution away from the actual markings

I'm a utility locator. I appreciate it when contractors take the time to double check locates. That said, use caution with that pipe horn. They're alright when things locate correctly. If that tracer is broken or damaged, it's very likely to bleed onto another facility and give you a false positive. Potholes are best practice of course, but not always practical. I recommend to contractors that they pull a flag and give the locator a call if they can't find a line potholing, or is mis-marked when they do a self locate. A non-response is an option but it's usually quicker to reach out directly, and then you don't get other locators out there for something you're not worried about. What area are you working from? If you're in an area my employer covers I can see if I can give you some contact info if you'd like.

Highway 40 was shutdown in Oneco Florida. We were putting in a lift station for Lee Foss. Then a orange line was right in the way. Lee said here is this hatchet. Bobby it's an old line, cut it out.

Great video. I always assumed those wires were for a tracer.

So...did you whack it? Was it marked out? Who was at fault, you or utilities locator company?

Long long time ago before 811 was a thing we drove a ground rod through a gas line... i know we all said the same thing. How in the fuq did that happen? If we were 1/2" either way it would have rolled in the sand. But no lucky us. 😅

Were you responsible for the repair? Or were the survey people on the hook?

Shouldve of used Hyrdo Excavation, basically using a pressure washer to dig out ground around sensitive areas, for example gas lines and electric conduits.

In the UK it's the gas suppliers responsibility up to the meter, its actually illegal to interfere with the gas supply. They will do repair work free of charge.

This is why u should probably have an excavation specialist around… whenever other trades try dirt work it always end in literal disaster/death 😂

I did utility locating for a couple years. Was hilarious how many lines were hit with the paint within 6 inches of being right on. Most expensive cut I saw was a fiber optic line that was the main loop in a major city. Yeah that contractor got a 200k bill😅
