its actually crazy how many terms that we just take for granted are just metaphors from older things

My computer and actual desktop are both the same, covered in random things that i forgot to clean

I canā€™t believe I was a computer science major and I only just now got that ā€œdesktopā€ is the top of your deskā€¦

Dude if you have another life time to spare, you would LOVE programming languages and compilers. Itā€™s a beautiful world where you get to dive deep into the truest meanings of information as a concept.

Now it's even weirder cuz now our desks have our computers on them, and those computers have a desktop, so it's a desktop on a desktop.

I always find it interesting how we get so stuck in certain things(such as the desktop) because of their easy access, yet in turn that limits us in a variety of ways. Technically there could be a much more efficient and effective way of organizing a PC yet we'll most likely never see it due to how widespread and accepted the use of the desktop is.

I never realized how deep the desktop metaphor actually goes

It'd be nice to have a computer that actually contains a desk visual and operates like a point and click game. You click on the cabinets to get an overhead view of the inside and can pass your curser along the files to look at the labels etc etc

i also like how modern computers allude to older computers, like how the "save" icon on lots of software is represented by floppy disks, and additionally people will still refer to their storage device as their "hard drive" even if they're actually using an SSD (solid state drive).

I hate one drive. My wife writes a lot and at least once she has lost an evening of writing by one drive screwing up and updating a document with an old copy.
Saving backups in the cloud is very useful tho.

It's seems fascinating to me how the digital world is interpreted as if it was like in real life

Now you gotta do one on the origin story of why the internet is called "the cloud"

Thatā€™s why I donā€™t store anything personal on the cloud. I save it to a detachable SSD I have plugged into my PC when I need it. Also I usually save stuff onto my PC instead of the cloud when I can. Cloud storage is BS

Back in the 90s, I used to tutor older folks on using their first computer. People liked the desktop metaphor until they noticed that they had a "My Computer" icon inside their computer, and they tried to think about what that icon was inside of. It kind of broke down at that point.

Wow I've never thought about this. I really wonder about the other options of organizing a computer now

What I find interesting is how the organization of my desktop mirrors the organization of my actual desk.
Both of them are very disorganized, with dozens of ā€œchaosā€ folders/piles to try and maintain some semblance of order.
Iā€™m still learning how to organize.

Vr lauchers and desktop are goated, (gaming lauchers for android in general) being able to set your desktop to Minecraft and walk around and interact with your files as items and program as other dimensions was peak

Is there a way to see what Network or Lifestream organized desks look like? That sounds really interesting and I'd love to figure out if it suits me more. A friend I work with uses basically just the terminal and processes everything best this way for example and I want to know if there's something more suitable for me out there
