I find the whole "This isn't Armored Core this is dark souls with mechs" argument to be very confusing. Looking at gameplay footage from older AC the only real difference i can see is that the older games had no heals. Other than that it looks pretty much the same as any other AC game. I mean the control scheme is different and more modern but that's a good thing since one of the biggest complaints about older AC games (and the mech genre in general) was the controls being clunky.
I think a good portion of the bad reviews are just written by people who are blinded by nostalgia.

Probably because of the non lock camera from older ac games where its like a 3rd person with 1st person lock camera (3rd gen or even 5th gen still have the camera fixed straight ahead of our ac)
