The full hands while trying to do stuff is so spot on. ADHD tip: I have realised it is immensely helpful to be mindful of my hands while I'm going through my day.
Because either one hand is carrying something throughout that entire chain of events because I didn't get around to the part of the chore that involves it leaving my hand and I forgot it was there or think I'll do that "in a minute". So I'm basically doing most chores one-handed.
And/or my mind is going faster than my body can keep up with, so I'll do this and that and might as well and could maybe also and when I'm here already and mustn't forget and this goes with that and if I leave this here I'll never find it back and to remind myself I also need to and then I drop fifteen things clumsily and messily and NOISILY and need to start cleaning up that mess while feeling extremely disregulated and exhausted and wired and angry WHILE STILL cradling all the other forty-five things precariously between my arms and chest. Two of the noisiest and messiest things already slipping.
So yeah, pay mind to your hands. I'm trying to keep a standard limit of two things at the same time. To put them down while I'm doing something. To empty my hands when I'm feeling stressed or disregulated or overwhelmed. And it works! It makes a ridiculous difference to everything. Now I can think and plan more calmly. Now I'm more aware of when things are getting out of hand (!). So I'm starting to notice new patterns.
For example, have you ever realized you can actually look around where everything is that you need for a task or a trip BEFORE you start walking around to gather them up? Instead of walking back and forth back and forth back and forth working yourself up in a tizzy both physically and mentally? Because I only realized yesterday. In my forties.
So yeah, mind your hands. It seriously makes a HUGE difference. To everything. And that flows into noticing and changing other things. Because we're actually good at that, doing/noticing/organising things in associated/patterned/interconnected ways that actually work well for us. We just need to make sure our hands and our minds aren't getting overloaded. Mind your hands.
