A devastating stampede claimed the lives of at least 40 people, including women and children, during a rally of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader and popular actor Vijay in Karur, Tamil Nadu, on Saturday (September 27).

Officials reported that the chaos erupted around 7:30 pm, just as Vijay was addressing thousands of his supporters who had been gathering at the venue since early afternoon, eager to catch a glimpse of him. The huge crowd swelled near his campaign vehicle, from where he was delivering his speech, when panic set in after several attendees began collapsing. Alarmed party workers raised cries for help, forcing Vijay to pause midway.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin convened an emergency meeting with senior authorities at the Secretariat to review the tragedy. He announced a Commission of Inquiry into the incident and declared an ex gratia of ₹10 lakh each to the families of the deceased.

Disturbing videos from the scene showed desperate people screaming for air, climbing over one another to escape suffocation in the overcrowded space. Some children were perched on their parents’ shoulders, watching Vijay’s bus approach moments before the tragedy struck.

As heat and congestion worsened, Vijay was seen halting his address and tossing water bottles into the crowd in an attempt to bring relief. Meanwhile, ambulances were trapped in the dense sea of people, making it extremely difficult to reach those who were injured.

After the incident, Vijay traveled to Trichy airport and flew back to Chennai. He avoided the media, covering his face from cameras, and chose not to comment until after he reached the state capitals
