Despite its powerful image, Russia's regime remains fragile. In June 2023, the Wagner mutiny revealed a demobilised civil society and a lack of public defence for Putin, unlike the 1991 coup against Gorbachev. Historian Donnacha Ó Beacháin explains why Russia may be quietly waiting for change from the top.

When we dislike a regime, we love to imagine that the locals dislike it too. We listen too much to the exiles and expats ….who have left for negative reasons not often shared by the masses.

You cannot change 2 things
1. Your parents
2. Putin as President of Russian federation

What in the world are you talking about no mass mobilization? Prigozhin said to the people specifically he was after the military staff leadership and not Putin. Despite that the small column of volunteers he had with him were detoured from the main highways and had to use back roads to reach Moscow because of civilian blockades created along with support of the regional guard corps.

And it had nothing to do with that most of those territories prigozhin went through are scarcely populated, the whole thing lasted 3 days or something...

Oh we have been hearing this garbage for almost three years.

Prighozin was stopped. More than three quarters of Wagner didn't follow him against Putin. Third Prighozin never challenged Putin but disagreed with upper military personnel. Last where is he now.

Putin grip on power has actually become stronger during this conflict.

He’s very popular in Russia. In fact he’s criticised for not being tougher on Ukraine.

There was no mass mobilisation against Putin either.

When Putin can no longer produce the goods for his Kremlin coterie then we might see him fall. However he is a master of removing any and all threats.
The economy is struggling now. This might be the trigger.

I live in Cyprus, and there are many Russians living in Cyprus. Some are against Putin, and most are pro Putin.
A friend of mine who's anti Putin complained that Putin rigged the elections and got over 80%. I asked him if Putin didn't Rigg the elections what percentage would he have gotten, and he replied about 60 to 65% .
Western leaders want regime change in Russia, and the Russians don't

Stop your dreams of regime changes. Live in your country, build your country, care for your own people, and leave us alone.

This is sheer hopium.
There is widespread support for this war in Russian population.
Infact from 2014 to 2022 Putin was catching a lot of flak in Russia for not doing enough to protect Russians in Donbas.

I think you're absolutely correct, but I think when people can't buy food, and they're not allowed to get the money out the bank, to pay for rent or other things, that's what I think did the fats going to go into the fire with Putin.

Yes, the Putin regime needs to be overthrown. But so does the Trump regime as well.

Prighozin rebelion is overrated. Prighozin said himself it wasn't a coup or a regime change. He had no problem with Putin but with Shoigou and Gerasimov.

To any of you in this comment section trying to portray our constitutional republic as if it is just as illegitimate as Russia’s government, you’re smoking some good shit. Only someone high off their ass would think they can say damn near anything they want online in critique of the US government, not be arrested for it, and then say “we’re just as bad as Russia”. Until the day comes where you can be arrested for whatever you say online that the government doesn’t like, you have it a million times better than Russians do. You’re ungrateful of the position you were born in. instead of being hyperbolic about it you should be making the same critiques against the current administration and congress, while also recognizing the fact that you can do that makes the US a more free society than Russia without contest. If you can’t recognize that, then I’m convinced you are living inside your own constructed reality that allows you to think this way, while rejecting what the true reality of the situation is. The US doesn’t have to be perfect to be better than Russia, because that country is a massive fucking dumpster fire. If we had the level of corruption in this country that Russia does there would’ve already been a revolution to throw off our government. Only hardcore conservatives will argue that the US Government is a perfect operation, but go ahead and see for yourself what it’s like living under the thumb of the Russian government, you’ll be running back waving American flags forever lmao. Nothing more hypocritical than using the rights the constitution gave you to talk about how unfree and undemocratic the US is. But in this country you’re allowed to be that much of an asshat, because of how FREE it is.

EXACTLY. If a faction in the US military took control of a bunch of tanks and missiles and machine guns and etc and started a march toward Washington DC, you'd see citizens and militias rise up against the coup and disable it or at least weaken it that such a coup cannot be succeed regardless of the administration's alignment, Republican it Democrat. Yes, Russia's leadership has demotivated the Russian populace to the extent that citizens feel like they have NO power, literally they cannot influence their government. It is owned, and they feel they are owned, by the criminals at the top. So, they feel they must sit back and watch the show. But they don't literally need to behave; the day they realize they have the power, Putin will be hanging from the nearest tree unless he can escape to...hmm, where would he actually go? Cuba? China? Brazil? Antarctica?
