My great grandfather flew the Avro Lancaster during the Second World War. when I was young he told me about the time his tail gunner got shot up by a German night fighter which they then shot down moments later they thought the tail gunner got the fighter but it was the top turret that actually got him, they didn’t realize till they landed that the entire back turret was missing it had been almost completely destroyed along with the man in it.
It is a miracle any of those men in those big lumbering targets of a plane survived.
