Many people know you must keep your thumb on the Tsuba handguard to prevent the katana from falling out and to unseal the katana. But you donā€™t just randomly place your thumb, but on the right side, closer to your body. There are two reasons why this is beneficial. To hide your thumb from attacks. To turn the katana efficiently. If you keep your thumb on the top or the left, you risk getting this attacked. You can avoid losing a finger just by slightly bringing your thumb to the right. Second, in Iai techniques, you often turn the katana over for uppercuts or reverse grip drawing. Turning the katana over is much easier if your thumb is on the right. If your thumb is on the left, this is as far as you can go. Please check out my online lessons if you want to learn katana techniques.

Thanks shogo! By the way, I must ask. Is there any relevance to the color of your kimono and Haori in Japanese culture? I know that colors may have cultural meanings and I wanted to know if the color of the kimono means anything

Point 3: it places the thumb in a position to push against the tsuba & unlock the habaki from the koi-guchi.

Still loving your content, in the ryuha I train in we never turn the sword during the draw to prevent telegraphing but I don't train iaido our ryuha is a battlefield form.

The drawing behind looks interesting... was it made with chalks?

What would you be drawing into reverse grip for? As a hema practitioner reverse grip is rare and drawing is de-emphasized so both at the same time are completely beyond me.

Is that a hanjijro tsuba? If so, that is pretty cool.
