If she really was a hoarder you would never be able to walk in her basement

I read a paper that once said for every child they find. There is another 20 still hidden.

My dad was cop in LA and violence against children was always a nerve spot for him. I remember him talking about a case where a man had propped up a bookshelf in front of a door to lock his daughter in her room, there were signs of SA and claims of much more darker stuff happening in the house. Initially, upon entry he didn’t know that the guy he had been called out on had a kid, but one of the neighbors had heard screaming coming from next door. When he walked past the hallway, he heard faint crying coming from behind a heavy, sturdy oak bookshelf. When it evolved into screaming he put his fist through the shelf and quite literally ripped it apart with his bare hands. His partner (my godfather) has said multiple times it was good he was there with my dad, at the time. The guy that the call was on was sexually abusing his kids and it’s likely my dad would have shot him right there.

Context: Burgess (the woman who finds the kid) answers a call from a neighbour complaining about the hoarders messy yard. When she and her partner arrive, they meet the hoarder, who is apologetic and clearly mentally unwell. Burgess takes pity on the hoarder and gives her some time to start tidying. Burgess and her partner return later and discover that no progress has been made. Because the site is hazardous due to the clutter, they have to arrest the hoarder. The hoarder begins to panic and cry. Burgess takes pity on the hoarder again, asking her to take one item and place it in a trash can. The hoarder complies, and Burgess counts this as enough progress to tick the box, meaning she doesn't have to arrest the hoarder. When Burgess returns to the precinct, she is confronted by her desk sergeant, Trudy. Trudy tells Burgess that she isn't helping the hoarder by being lenient, and that she needs to go back and arrest the hoarder for creating a hazardous environment. When Burgess unwillingly returns, she enters the hoarder's home and sees signs of a child, but doesn't see any children. When she attempts to enter the basement, the hoarder, who has been meek and apologetic, flies into a frenzy. This clip ensues.

What you didn’t see was the female cop was going to let the mother off, despite being sent to fine her for not maintaining her property. It was only after getting reprimanded by her sergeant that she and her partner went back and found the child.

This reminds me of the case in Quincy Illinois I was told about when I was little. Same situation little boy pocked in the basement but I was told that as soon as the kid was let out he says "I need to go back inside if Mommy finds me out I'll be in trouble". Which if true still breaks my heart to this day.

Even though this is a TV show, there are horror stories of parents actually like this.

This is why I could never be a cop, the minute I get called to a child endangerment case, I’m going ham on the adult, fk this badge, you bout to get these hands

she can clearly hear a child crying and still engages in the most threatening, least disarming way possible. that’s how you know they got real cops to weigh in.

So is no one gonna explain why she had her kid locked up in a hole in the basement wall?

This is actually what people did with their kids that were had out of wedlock back in the 1900s, they'd lock them in rooms either in the attic or basement, it happened all the time.

When I was in HS we heard about a family that his their kids I think it was 4 of them. They were hidden in an attic and never saw the outside basically and my teacher said the kids skin was so pale they almost looked transparent because they'd literally never been outside or seen the sun. At the time I heard about it my first thought was how much the sun must have hurt their eyes that first time out of the dark attic.
